A little while ago, searchers found the body of Micah True, aka Caballo Blanco. He had gone out for a morning run near the Gila National Park in New Mexico, and never returned. I’m not going to attempt to write some kind of longwinded obituary here; that should be left to the people that knew and ran with him. All I can say is that in the brief time I’ve known about Micah, he managed to inspire me.
Like many other people, I first came across the name Caballo Blanco through the pages of Born To Run. That was just a few months ago, and since then I’ve watched just about every video and read every interview I could find. What was clear to me was that this man had found something. It was something good, and I wanted it. And that is more or less what set me on my current path, a path I’m certain will continue for the rest of my life. It says a great deal about the man that he was an inspiration to me and many others simply through word of his exploits. In this age of instant media and ubiquitous internet connection, here was a man that made his name by simply running on his own in the wilderness. I don’t think he would have cared if nobody had ever heard of him, that’s not what it was about. As Barefoot Ted says in the comments underneath this YouTube video, he was the real deal, and he had a plan.
So, farewell then Caballo Blanco. You made the world a better place for some of the people in it, just by being yourself. I can’t think of any higher praise than that.
